What's better - Closed Rhinoplasty or open rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is an operation which is done on the nose. It requires a highly skilled plastic surgeon to perform the treatment. There are two main ways that rhinoplasty can be done – either open or closed rhinoplasty. Of course, there are some upsides and downsides to having both types of treatment.

The latter is done by cutting the incisions inside the nose. This is good as the surgery will leave no scarring which can be seen by the human eye. However, closed rhinoplasty is very limited in its uses. It can do very simple procedures, else there could be damage; the inner nose needs to be opened to carry out more meticulous work. So, it is best for people who only need a small amount of cosmetic surgery on their nose that closed rhinoplasty will work for.

One example is the removal of a dorsal hump – but the point of their nose and the overall structure still remains in good condition. If people decide to undergo closed rhinoplasty, then there are many benefits for them to reap. For example, the time that it takes for the nose to heal is a lot less than other rhinoplasty methods. This is because the treatment creates less swelling.

However, open rhinoplasty is done in a totally different manor. Instead of making a cut inside the nose, a delicate incision is created across the fleshy area which keeps the nostrils apart. The skin of the nose is then pulled back slowly so that the cartilage and surrounding tissues can be seen. This procedure leaves a small scar unlike closed rhinoplasty. But the scar is very small; it can hardly be seen. As it is a more brutal treatment, more recovery time may be needed as the nose may swell up a lot more with this technique.

The latter of the two rhinoplasty techniques is favoured by many plastic surgeons as it lets them see the cartilage in its natural form. This way, they can see much easier what treatment needs to be done. In the more complex operations, this is highly important; hence why closed rhinoplasty isn’t usually done with these situations. In Asian rhinoplasty especially, they almost always use the open procedure as the problems are usually much worse.

It is much easier to find a plastic surgeon which will perform open rhinoplasty instead of closed rhinoplasty. More doctors are trained in this field, so they will be more familiar with the technique than the closed technique. If a surgeon has practised the closed rhinoplasty technique for many years, then it may well be that they can perform those more complex procedures, but it’ll be hard to find a doctor which will do this.

This is why it is very important to search for doctors which do both closed rhinoplasty and the other technique, as they will be able to give advice on what cheap rhinoplasty treatment may be right for you.
